Reflect:
When it was time to eat the Passover supper, Jesus and his friends (the disciples) went to an upper room in a house in Jerusalem. Jesus took a towel and a bowl of water and began to wash his disciples’ feet. Peter, his trusted disciple, did not understand the reason he did this, but Jesus explained that it was an example of how we should continue to love and care for one another.
On the table was lamb and bread and wine. Jesus explained that this was the last time they would eat together, as he would be arrested the following day and crucified. The disciples protested, but he told them that one of them had already accepted money to betray him. This was a man called Judas, who slipped away from the table to do the deed.
Jesus took a chunk of bread and said a prayer of thanks before breaking it and passing it round to the other disciples. “This is my body,” he said, “I give it up for you. Take it and eat it and remember me.”
Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks for that also. “This is my blood. Take it and drink it, and remember me/”
After the meal had ended they went with him to a garden called Gethsemane, where he prayed to God, – but the disciples were tired and fell asleep.
